Liturgical Work

Much of the liturgical work I do includes design ideas from other liturgical designers, myself and or parishes and creating files that visualize their ideas. Like most design work, i can start from simple sketches eventually producing the finished design drawings in Revit, a modeling program. My images are not only realistic but also produce working drawings. In the case of baptismals, plumbing and electrical requirements.

When a parish seeks design assistance to enhance, update or expand their worship space, it is typical to hire someone like me, a liturgical designer. In certain instances where structural design is needed or other circumstances require, an architect may and should be brought in to the process. The liturgical designer and architect will work together to fulfill the parishes intent. Many parishes form a committee to work with the designers as a team.

The Process

There are several ways to start this process. My approach is as follows;

This process can take some time. Churches generally view time in a little different manner than other construction projects may. In many instances the key dates or start and completion may be tied to observed holidays. Other reasons such as raising funds may affect the timeline of the project. Depending on the project, It is always a good practice to hire a reliable contractor used to the design build process. The contractor should have experience in faith projects. Since these types of projects a difficult to “bid out” especially at this early stage, I recommend an interview process instead. Having a contractor on board can help check and keep the budget within the parishes goals.

My Experience

Through design build I have built multiple churches and other religious spaces throughout Northern California. I’ve worked with architects or other designers depending on the type of project. My role was generally to ensure the space adhered to the intent of the parish but also served in a pleasant way the liturgical intent. Lighting, access and reinforcing belief are strong components of any religious space.

My background in construction and design allows me to assist the architect if one is on board or to provide the drawings and details necessary to construct the furnishings.
